There are so many people making a "State of the Catholic Church Address". So many proposals. And, of course, it all depends on where you stand.
The Catholic Church (religious and laity) is part of society and not immuned to the ills of society and its influences. Whatever problems the Church has, society has. Whatever problems society has, the Church has it as well.
The Church, at any given time in history, has its joyful, sorrowful, glorious, and luminous mysteries. Every saint is a reformer - going against the tide. Generally, going against one's inclination to join the world.
It is a given that good and evil co-exist in our pilgrim world. That is our dilemma. That is our battle with our very selves... where do we side? And which side is good or evil?
Yes, there are things to be done. There are things that need to change. The Truth is unchanging, but we can always align ourselves with the truth and be a co-worker of the Truth. It is an inexhaustible journey to the "depths, breadth, and width" of it.
Rather than making a "state of the nation address" or a "state of the church address", the best Lenten practice we can do is make a "state of the self address" and bring it to God and the Sacrament of Confession.
"Human evil and ignorance simply cannot thwart the divine plan of salvation and redemption. Evil is simply incapable of that."
-Pope Benedict XVI, March 2012-
