I used to go to mass alone and personally, I actually prefer it. Why? because it's a date!
The Sunday Mass is my special date with my beloved Jesus. Beforehand, my Date and I have already talked of the time and place. The "time" is not going to be moved to fit into my plans but everything on Sunday had to revolve on that fixed date and place. There are many other churches and other mass times, but no... it must be on the time and place I have told Him. It's a date, rain or shine.
It's a date! and I don't want to be late.
Bath time, clothes to wear... yes, and there's that tinge of excited agitation of looking at the clock and looking forward to the time I will be spending with my Jesus. I want to be early, I can wait.
The Sunday Mass, though it is a fellowship with other people, is basking in my time together with Jesus. Being present and finding the presence of my Lord. The depth and mystery of the Sacrament is never lost. Every word is heard like it was the first time. Every response is said with consciousness to its meaning. Every silent moment is just gazing upon each other. And even if I am not in the best of mood every Sunday, it's a date and I'll be there.
Having a "date" - a time and place set aside- with Jesus is a wonderful way to experience the obligatory Sunday Mass. You can even be rest assured that Jesus will never stood you up.
